Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal stated that an electronic national identity card system will be introduced for all citizens of Nepal. In an effort to promote e-governance in a sustainable manner, the government agencies have established what is known as the “Government Integrated Data Center (GIDC).”
“Distribution of the computerized citizenship card and electronic passports are the hallmarks of e-governance,” said Prime Minister Nepal, inaugurating the event amid a function organized in the capital. He further stated that with the launch of the GIDC, a beginning has been made towards e-governance, which would make government works transparent and hassle-free.
Government officials said that the GIDC could act as a backbone infrastructure for implementing the e-governance and e-service delivery, they opined that the main challenge they confronted was to efficiently operate this new infrastructure. The data center is a centralized location for the storage, management, processing and exchange of data that exists within a specific enterprise or a specialized agency.
The main aim of the data center is to build up an integrated operational environment for e-government portals, e-administration and e-government applications, as stated by the officials on the occasion. The data center has the capacity to store all of the government data across the nation for up to 15 years. Once ready, the GIDC will provide services like data storage facilities, sharing computing resources, e-mail, Internet and website hosting.
Authorities have expected that all ministries and departments would be connected to the data center by a high-speed network so that they can operate their applications from their own premises in a secure manner.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has injected a sum of US$3,500,000 to establish the center.
