Heaps of e-mails arriving at work stations are putting immense pressure on Australian employees, a survey by computer giant IBM revealed on Tuesday.
The survey of 629 managers found 45 percent agreed that having too many irrelevant e-mails in their inbox created a stressful workplace.
Seven percent found it very stressful, whilst half of respondents agreed that unanswered e-mails were also contributing to workplace stress.
The stress of constantly responding to e-mails affected 48 percent of workers, rising to 54 percent in organizations with more than 500 employees, the survey said.
Almost 100 percent of respondents said e-mail remained the most commonly used collaborative tool in the workplace but was often overwhelming or used in the wrong way, leading to avoidable workplace stress.
IBM Australia spokesman James Gorry said, "It is clear that Australian organizations are missing an opportunity to encourage the adoption of enterprise grade social networking tools, alongside the old favorites including e-mail, as these technologies can both increase employee morale as well as drive a more efficient workforce."
