(KPL ) Minister to Prime Minister's Office and President of the National Water Resources and Environment Authority Mme. Khempheng Pholsena told the sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific that Laos is implementing the water sources management in an integrated manner.

The meeting was held on 1-2 October at Astana, Kazakhstan, to assess challenges in the context of environment and development in the Asia and Pacific region, review regional progress in achieving the international development goals, promote dialogues between the Asia and Pacific region and Europe on environment and development issues.

Mme. Khempheng said that the Lao government was implementing an ambitious target of increasing the forest coverage to 70 per cent of the entire land by 2020 and establishing the disaster warning system.

In her speech at the meeting, Mme. Khempheng emphasised the importance of green development, which is a policy alternative that would enhance the competitiveness and environmental sustainability as well as participatory development and poverty reduction in the region.

She told the meeting that the excessive exploitation of natural resources would restrain the government to achieve green development.
