Australian Trade Minister Craig Emerson says he's concerned that some countries may use the issue of climate change as an excuse to put up trade barriers.
British climate change economist Nicholas Stern says countries that don't put a price on carbon...risk being shut out of world markets.
Dr Emerson has told Australian commercial television that he's watching the debate closely.
"What it actually is is all those old protectionist instincts coming out and we will use whatever trading rules through the WTO to fight against the use of these devices to protect industries in Europe or anywhere else from against competition," he said.
