The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said Tuesday it has picked 43 local ports in 32 prefectures to be prioritized in a government program for infrastructure improvements beginning in the year from next April. Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture and Nakagusuku in Okinawa Prefecture are among the 43 selected from 103 ports designated by the government as playing complementary roles to the nation’s 23 top-tier ports.
The ministry began the selection process last December as part of its drive to cut waste in public works programs which has been promoted by the government led by the Democratic Party of Japan, launched in September last year. Cargo transaction volumes and the weight of importance to regional economies were key factors in choosing the local ports along with the prospects of future demand growth, the ministry said.
The ministry is expected to announce shortly its picks of ports designated as international freight shipments hubs. Officials suggest that high on the shortlist are the port areas of Keihin, which includes Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama, as well as Hanshin, which involves Kobe and Osaka.
