Expert members of a government panel on Thursday compiled an action plan calling for major allocations for research in eight fields concerning the environment, medicine and life science in the budget for the next fiscal year, with a view to boosting economic growth in the next decade.
The government’s Council for Science and Technology Policy will serve as a ‘‘command center’’ that acts as a bridge between ministries and agencies in sorting out projects before each of the government offices comes up with its request for the new annual budget from next April, according to government officials.
Five of the eight fields designated by the panel members relate to the environment. They involve improvements in solar-power generation, the development of technology for using biomass energy, improvements in rechargeable batteries, energy saving through the use of next-generation ‘‘smart grid’’ power transmission networks, and the greening of infrastructure through the use of Earth-monitoring technology.
The remaining three areas concern medicine and life science—cancer research, the compilation of a DNA database on and epidemiological studies into 100,000 people, and the development of technology in support of nursing care for the elderly.
