Australia's Low Waged Workers Win Pay Rise

Unions and the Australian government have welcomed a $AU26 a week pay rise for the lowest paid workers, but the Chamber of Commerce and Industry says it's extreme and excessive. Fair Work Australia says the minimum wage should go up by $26 a week from July. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Greg Evans says that's a blow to business, especially retail hospitality and tourism.

"It's not fair its not affordable." The increase is just short of the $27 raise unions wanted - the ACTU's Jeff Lawrence says it will help the economy and the retail sector. "Low paid workers actually spend what they get and I'm sure they'll spend this." The government had not said how much it thought Fair Work Australia should grant low paid workers, but it has welcomed this announcement. The Opposition leader Tony Abbott says he doesn't begrudge workers a pay rise but he worries employers will be more reluctant to hire.
