MUSCAT In a move to provide secured and reliable e-services in various government departments, the Information and Technology Authority (ITA) has launched a National Digital Certification Centre (NDCC) for the benefit of corporates and individuals in their business ventures.

The NDCC was launched at a function under the patronage of HE Said Bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Ports and Maritime Affairs, and ITA Board member.

The NDCC was part of a major e-project which was the authorised e-signature delivery system via smartphones in which certificates were issued to corporates and individuals.

Yaqoob Bin Dur Mohammed Al Balushi, Deputy CEO for infrastructure and e-services, in his speech, stressed the importance of this project in terms of easing e-services for businesses, government and individuals. He pointed out the services would become more secured, trusted and integrated through the NDCC.

The e-project also establishes an electronic certification infrastructure which ensures confidentiality and data integrity.

While the ITA and Nawras signed an agreement to incorporate and integrate the PKI technology via smart phones, Omantel would announce the integration soon.

According to officials, the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) would help the service providers to overcome certain obstacles which they face when identifying and authenticating online users. With the PKI, the online service providers would be able to utilize the different types of digital certificates with authentication, confidentiality, integrity and non-repudiation features.

PKI technology is used to maintain a more secure online environment. It provides an increased level of confidence for exchanging information over an Tncreasingly insecure internet. It helps to identify the users in electronic transactions when utilising online services and digitally sign information to provide assurance to the recipient that it was not changed in transit. In Oman, Information Technology Authority (ITA) by National Digital Certification Center’s PKI is the legal trusted authority known as Root Certificate Authority (RCA). It provides PKI services to enable users of the Internet to securely and privately exchange data and money through the use of public and private cryptographic key pairs which obtained and shared by ITA.
