Info security in focus at cyber conference

MUSCAT — The first regional cyber security conference kicked-off at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel yesterday under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health. The conference aims at benefiting from the international expertise and experiences in the field of cyber security, providing an opportunity to discuss the challengers and difficulties facing countries and governments while trying to develop the IT & C sector, especially those related to information security.

The opening of the two-day conference organised by Information Technology Authority (ITA) represented by the National Information Security Centre, coincides with the opening of Regional Cyber Security Centre. The Health Minister described the conference as an important event that came at a time the digital technology is spreading on the personal, practical, and corporate and government levels.

He hoped that the governmental organisations, companies and individuals would benefit from the conference and protect themselves and their organisations against the penetration risks by IT professionals who managed to get not only personal information but rather information related to the countries security and their economic interest. He affirmed that the Ministry of Health will seek to benefit from this conference on all levels.

Dr Salim Sultan al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, in his speech pointed out that Information Society Summit that was held in Tunisia in 2005, the Geneva Summit that was held in 2003 stressed the importance of cyber security and building trust and security in the sue of IT&C.; He pointed out that the Arab world Connectivity Summit held in Qatar in March 2012 came out with some recommendations in cyber security field, noting that the regional arena in general and the Arab region in particular witnessed rapid development in the use of IT&C; which led to a remarkable increase in the number of IT&C; users.

Ibrahim al Haddad, Director of the Regional Office of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) delivered a speech where he praised the progress made by the Sultanate in IT&C; filed in general and information security in particular. He thanked the Sultanate for the support given to the international efforts in the field of combatting security threats which were recently crowned by hosting the Regional Cyber Security Centre.
The first day included a number of working papers on addressing the security challenges and threats, cyber security plans implementation, the joint achievements among the local and international information security centres, the industrial control systems, e-terrorism, moral piracy and other important titles in this field.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of ministers, undersecretaries Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Chairman of IMPACT Organisation, as well as decision makers and information security officials at governmental organisations and infrastructure companies in the Sultanate. — ONA
