Monday 18 April 2011, a press conference was held to announce the details of the COMEX 2011 exhibition which will be held from 25-29 April 2011, at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, which is jointly organized by the Information Technology Authority (ITA) and Oman International Trade and Exhibition OITE. This year’s COMEX will be held under the theme “Shift to e”, which embodies the inspirational vision of e.oman to transform the Sultanate of Oman into a sustainable knowledge society by leveraging Information and Communication Technologies to enhance government services, enrich businesses and empower individuals.
Mr. Talal Sulaiman Al Rahbi, Deputy CEO of ITA, gave a speech during the press conference and said, “The COMEX ICT Exhibition 2011 seeks to attain excellence in terms of information technology and communications both locally and internationally in a bid to lay down the foundations of the ICT industry in the Sultanate. That is why the Exhibition will be showcasing the latest and best technologies in the field of computers, software and software programs. This is in addition to holding several distinguished workshops and symposia in the domain of computers and software.
“The Exhibition offers a golden opportunity to all government organizations to highlight their latest programs and electronic services. It also provides the latest developments in the world of technology for its visitors in the Sultanate. The Exhibition is expected to allocate a pavilion for eGovernment Services, one of the most important areas at the Exhibition. This pavilion will be introducing the e-services offered by different government organizations which aim at facilitating and simplifying the daily procedures of the citizens. In the current round of the Exhibition, the pavilion will include 26 government organizations seeking to provide services and different technological solutions for all the Exhibition’s visitors.
"As witnessed today, the telecom sector in the Sultanate is becoming a more dynamic market and several competitions are bringing wider range of services and prices in the sector. It should be stressed that the government is currently undertaking significant efforts to extend telecom services to all regions in Oman," said Ahmed Saleh Baabood, Executive Chairman of OITE, one of the organizers of the event.
Baabood noted the sultanate has made strides in developing the sector and has put in place an extensive eGovernment infrastructure. "Introducing better government services to citizens and business, creating knowledge-based industries and developing the IT sector are among the priorities of the government," he pointed out. At COMEX, there will be a Shopper’s Section which will gather providers of the world's biggest brands and offer an excellent opportunity for technology enthusiasts to take home the latest innovations at exceptional prices.
Newly added features at this year’s COMEX include a new and enhanced media centre with many activities providing information on new technology and entertainment for all visitors. A series of workshops will also run parallel to the exhibition. COMEX 2011 will focus on the ICT initiatives taken to enable efficient and effective delivery of products and services to customers and citizens by digitalizing their life through information technology. Last year, COMEX proved to be a big hit with over 120 companies participating and more than 70,000 visitors flocking in from Singapore, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Jordan and Qatar.
2nd COMEX Conference
The 2nd COMEX 2011 Conference will be organized parallel to the exhibition to provide participating delegates with an opportunity to learn and explore how the latest ICT trends and strategies can impact their existing and new business models and help their organisations to improve efficiency and achieve the bottom line. To be held on the 26th and 27th of April respectively, at the Golden Tulip Hotel Seeb, the conference will bring delegates up close and personal with people and products that will shape the future of information and communication technology.
The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Mobility as a driving force towards business transformation’. The conference will highlight various topics related to mobility including the latest mobile/wireless technologies and trends, and discuss how they impact Omani businesses. The conference will also focus on ‘Technologies & Strategies for SMEs’ and will include a focus session for small and medium enterprises aiming at providing the latest technological solutions, practical advice and strategies that will bring more benefits and value to SMEs. This year’s attendees at the conference, from both public and private sectors, are expected to touch more than 250 visitors.
