South Africa: New Immigration Laws Have a Number of Positives
Source: Google Alert
Source Date: Thursday, January 15, 2015
Focus: ICT for MDGs
Country: South Africa

For a foreigner wishing to open a business or invest in a company in South Africa and obtain a business/investment visa, proof of a R5million sum and an undertaking to invest this over a maximum of 2 years is necessary. For some, this is simply too high a figure and the Department of Home Affairs makes provision for applicants to apply for a waiver of some or all of this amount. Only certain business categories qualify to apply for this waiver and that number has shot up from under 10 to around 130 different business types. Some of these include firms in the ICT, Tourism, Green Energy and Oil & Gas industries. Download the full business visa waiver list here.
There also exists a work visa type currently called the critical skills work visa, attempting to attract much needed expats into South Africa. Previously known as either the Quota Work Permit or the Exceptional Skills Work Permit, the list of quota skills was very sparse indeed. This has all changed now, with a critical skills list (click to download) of over 150 different job titles which are all desperately needed by South Africa's economy. ICT features again, as do engineering, medical and research skills.
Yet another good number in South African immigration at the moment is the application fee at our facilitation centers, which is set at R1,350. While many people see this as yet another cost, there is no other way but to charge for obtaining a visa into SA and this amount is in fact lower than the global average. This cost makes good service and administration at the application centers possible, something that lacked greatly in the past SA immigration and visa regime.
On the note of application centers, there are a total of 11 newly erected VFS Global offices. These span South Africa quite well and no-one has to travel too far to be able to submit for a visa. Have a look at the various VFS offices here. If you are not in South Africa, there are many South African embassies, consulates and missions to apply at abroad.
All in all, while going through immigration, relocation and visa applications is never easy and always a challenging time, it is good to know that our country is moving in the right direction.
