South Africa: UNPAN-SADC Workshop Held in SA
Source: Centre for Public Service Innovation News
Source Date: Tuesday, October 28, 2014
Focus: Electronic and Mobile Government, Citizen Engagement, Internet Governance
Country: South Africa
Created: Oct 28, 2014

The purpose of the workshop was to capacitate the UNPAN-SADC regional delegates on Public Sector Innovation Management, sharing of ideas regarding links between innovation and knowledge management and also to strengthen relationships between the countries in the region. The workshop also served to review the 2013 progress report. Perhaps more important, is that the workshop also served to strengthen content contribution by the SADC region.
The workshop opened with welcoming remarks from CPSI CEO, Ms Thuli Radebe who warmly welcomed all the delegates from the SADC region. She emphasised the importance of the workshop within the UNPAN framework and expressed her excitement in the growth of the workshop in terms of countries that were represented. She then gave a presentation on the importance of knowledge management in the context of the public sector and argued that without it, it would be difficult for innovation to thrive. She drew from her rich experience in the area when offering her valuable insights.
Her presentation was followed by the 2013 progress report which indicated that the SADC region was doing well in terms of contributions onto the UNPAN Portal. However, there was indication that more needs to be done by some countries that are still not sending contributions to the portal. The positive news was that a country such as Namibia has taken the UNPAN Portal project with commendable enthusiasm as they briefly shared their innovative ways in which they promote and encourage contributions into the portal within their country. Members were urged to continue supporting the portal. These were followed by engagements with the delegates which resulted in a rich discussion.
The second day of the workshop focused on the Public Sector Innovation Management course which was developed by the CPSI and is offered in South Africa for training at the National School of Government. The course was delivered in a way which allowed delegates to reflect on their experiences in their application of concepts contained in the course. The delegates were also exposed to different innovative initiatives taking place in their own countries, and of course factors that work against innovation. Delegates felt that the course was an eye opener as it introduced them to fresh concepts which will enable them to approach work in a different way.
The CPSI which is the regional coordinator for SADC felt the need to acknowledge that without the cooperation of and support by all the participating SADC countries, they would not be performing as they are now as an Online Regional Centre.
The workshop ended with participants getting certificates recognising their work in supporting and promoting the portal.
