“It is the human right of every learner to receive instruction in the language of their choice,” said the Deputy Minister.
He was speaking during a visit to Noluthando School for the Deaf in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Friday.
He said it was crucial that teachers and trainers of children with hearing impairment be conversant in the “language” that is used for teaching and learning for all learners.
In all nine provinces, there are schools for children with hearing impairment, where the curriculum is equally divided among academic subjects and practical/trade subjects.
The Deputy Minister said the majority of these schools go up to matric, thereby enabling graduating students to go on and study and receive training to become artisans, to become skilled tradesmen and women and to become professionals in any field they choose to study.
