Hurter describes the car as a lightweight, aerodynamic, electric vehicle which uses photovoltaic cells to convert available energy from the sun to drive the electric hub motor. He adds the vehicle was constructed from carbon fibre with an Airex foam core, which provides a lightweight design.
He says 12 months was dedicated purely to the design of iLanga II, while the team spent four to six months focusing on manufacturing and assembly.
"The University of Johannesburg's solar car project creates an environment where we can connect research with industry. Working on a project like this in such a competitive environment, you have to push the state-of-the-art in every little thing you do. We have very unique applications and design problems, new technologies and techniques which inevitably drive innovation and knowledge transfer, both ways," he says.
"We aim to push the design limits with this vehicle, creating something that will get people excited about the technology and what the future might hold," he adds.
According to Hurter, iLanga II is by far one of the most advanced solar-powered vehicles produced by UJ students, guaranteed to gyrate the grey matter of those interested in various fields of engineering, technology, innovation, sustainable energy, motor racing, design and education.
The team consists of Nickey Janse van Rensburg (UJ Energy Movement project coordinator); Hurter; Lebohang Mokoena (mechanical design); and professor Wimpie Clarke, CEO of Resolution Circle.
The launch event, which starts at 6pm, is open to students and members of the public, subject to availability of space at the auditorium at the university's Auckland Park, Johannesburg, campus.
