Dr Mulenga disclosed that in the past fifty years, Zambia's Public Service Commission had grown from having a few employees to over 160,000.
He said the increase in the number of public servants had been necessitated by the progressive increase in the country's population and demand for public goods and services.
He said this year's theme 'Celebrating Fifty years of God's favour: A public service enchored on continuous improvement in service delivery for sustainable development and wellbeing of the people of Zambia' should give employees an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable transformation of the public service and its immense contribution to national development from independence.
Dr Mulenga said remarkable progress had been recorded with regards to gender equality in the public service, as more women had been recruited and appointed to top and middle management positions which were previously male dominated.
Dr Mulenga, however, said the public service also played a critical role in the governance system of the country through decentralisation.
He also presented trophies to deserving government ministries that performed well during the Public Service exhibition held on Parirenyatwa Road last week.
