When Vadi arrived at the school this morning, the learners were already seated for assembly. He proceeded to speak immediately, as the task of teaching and learning awaited both educators and learners.
“We are visiting your school to monitor as well as to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Since we know that you are one of the best performing schools in the Gauteng North region, [we are here to] praise and support you,” he said.
Last year, the school’s matric pass rate stood at 93.4%, significantly above the national average.
“We are saying to you, especially those who are in grade 12 this academic year, a high standard has been set, the bar is very high. But you must cross it. As the provincial government, we are fully behind you and we are expecting 100% quality results in grade 12 this academic year,” Vadi said to rousing applause from the learners.
Before handing over the uniforms (from the Social Development Department) to deserving learners identified by the school, Vadi told learners that getting a senior certificate was just the beginning of a life-long learning process.
“Stop thinking that once you get a senior certificate, you have received everything in life. Furthering your studies after matric is crucial.
“I’m really happy and proud about the hard work of the teachers at this school. I was also impressed by the order and discipline at this school and this shows that there is strong leadership at the school,” said Vadi.
His visit was part of the Gauteng provincial government’s Back-to-School campaign.
High hopes for the school
School principal Margret Mashao-Thulare said: “In grade 8 to grade 12, we have almost 900 learners, with 31 educators. Established in 2007 with grade 8 to grade 10, and they introduced grade 12 in 2009.”
Asked about her school’s matric pass rate, Mashao-Thulare said in 2009, they achieved 77%; 85% in 2010; 98% in 2011; 92% in 2012 and 93.4 % in 2013.
Mashao-Thulare said the school was happy that the MEC paid them a personal visit. “… I was moved when he acknowledged us as hard workers. His visit presented us with an opportunity to brief him about the challenges that we are facing as a school.”
According to Mashao-Thulare, there are 94 students in grade 12. She said they aimed to get a 100% pass rate, with quality results this academic year.
“Every grade 12 teacher at this school knows that he or she must produce a 100% pass rate every year and this year, we are hoping to get quality results, more than we did last year.”
Matric learners at Mpumelelo used a local hall to write the final examinations, but Mashao-Thulare said the City of Tshwane has already informed them that this year, they will have to pay to use the community hall.
“Last year, we were told by the City that we must pay for the writing of examinations [at the hall]. The hall is so conducive for the learners to write their examinations, but the challenge is that we don’t have funds to pay the City,” she said.
Grade 12 learner Michelle Mashishi, 18, said she was confident that she would do well in the exams. “I am definitely going to pass so that I can realise my dream of studying Dental Technology.”
No less confident, her classmate Emmanuel Molamu has his sights set on engineering. “I want to break the record by becoming the first student to get a 100% in mathematics [at the school].”
Vadi concluded his Back-to-School campaign at Refilwe Primary School, near Cullinan.
