CSIR business development manager, Yoliswa Kula, says the facility is aimed at providing the full scope of accredited test methods in compliance with Blue and Green drop certification requirements during the first phases of the laboratory’s implementation. In the subsequent phase, the laboratory will provide analytical testing of food and beverage products in compliance with the food labelling regulation (R146). The lab is currently operating as a non-accredited laboratory, with an application to SANAS planned for the end of the year. The lab, notes Kula, is instrumental in sectors such as aquaculture and agro-processing, as there is a need for more accurate analytical testing done in real time.
The laboratory is staffed by experts who specialise in chemical and microbiological analysis of environmental samples, as well as microbiological analysis of food and beverage samples. The focus is on uplifting the living conditions of the people of the Eastern Cape; hence preference for employment in this laboratory is given to the people who are from the surrounding areas.
Ludwe Fani of ELIDZ comments: “This lab is a key enabler of industry growth and innovation.” She adds that the lab would help with real-time testing of micro samples while providing industries with a competitive advantage. “This will also bring down logistics costs.”
