"Our Commonwealth approach is to see democracy, development, and respect for diversity, as mutually supportive and melding to form the bedrock of national harmony, and progress for all our people," he said on Friday.
Citing the summit's theme, "Growth with Equity; Inclusive Development," Sharma said that everyone in the Commonwealth should be better able to share the fruits of prosperity and none should be left behind.
He also called on the member states to enhance multilateral cooperation in order to "find practical solutions to the many great tasks before the Commonwealth, and the world at large."
Prince Charles, who is standing in for his mother Queen Elizabeth, as the head of the Commonwealth, used his opening address, to appeal for intensified cooperation to resolve economic, social and environmental challenges.
The CHOGM, which is held every two years, ends today, and it is the first time an Asian country hosts the summit in 24 years.
Delegates from the 53 member states of the organisation, including President Jacob Zuma are discussing various issues such as debt management, climate finance for small and vulnerable states, as well as practical trade measures to help increase exports, among others.
Leaders to decide on key proposals
The leaders will today have to decide on key proposals to allow member countries to manage debt to achieve sustainable development.
The proposals will tackle debt by swapping them for climate finances in ways that were not accessible before, as well as allowing middle income countries to have access to concessionary loans.
The second proposal is to allow small states to be able to contribute to the post-2015 development framework that is currently being discussed by the 53 members of the Commonwealth.
