Potential tenants are selected according to specific criteria such as, they must a be South African citizen; not an owner of any property in the municipality, earn between R1 600 and R3 500 per month (gross income); not owe the municipality any services money; pass an affordability check and they must be a major to be able to sign the legal documents.

Payments are based on the unit type, size and minimum rent per month. Monthly rent for a bachelor unit (30m2) is R580 month, with the tenant’s minimum income per month being R1 600 to R2 200.

Rent for a one-bedroom unit (40m2) will be R780, with the tenant’s minimum income per month being R2 200 to R2 700. Rent for a two-bedroom unit (53m2) will be R920, with the tenant’s minimum income per month being between R2 700 to R3 500.

Maloyi also congratulated the selfless and committed men and women, who volunteered at the department to conduct a socio-economic study around Extension 39. He gave the volunteers certificates of recognition.

The study revealed a high rate of unemployment and influx from rural to urban areas, among others.

The launch was attended by 1 500 people from Extension 39 and the surrounding area, who said they were looking forward for the completion of the project so more housing options can be available to them.

Maloyi also used the platform to send his condolences to the family of a young woman, who was allegedly raped and murdered by the man (known as “Hammer Man”), who continues to terrorise communities around Mahikeng/Mmabatho.

“As government, we will not rest until this capital city is safe to reside in … We have a constitutional mandate to protect our community. That’s the reason we … launched Community Safety Forums across the province to work with the police to fight crime,” said Maloyi.
