The process to merge the Kenya ICT Board, eGovernment and Government Information Technology Services (GITS) into the Kenya ICT Authority has begun. Heads of the three agencies and departments have already held a number of meetings with Cabinet Secretary, Francis Matiang'i.
The Authority will have an expanded mandate, and will see ICT officers, who are currently seconded to other ministries by eGovernment, coming under the Authority. The authority will see the consolidation of ICT initiatives in the government, which at times it is unclear under which agency and Ministry they would come under, with at least three ministries previously handling IT functions.
Deputy President, William Ruto, has previously stated that the government would be consolidating all IT functions under the Ministry of ICT. eGovernment was under the Office of the President, which was expected to drive IT adoption across government by the virtue of being under the office. GITS fell under Treasury and ended up with budgets for tasks such as hosting of ministry websites.
A process that will see gazettement of the authority, hence giving it legality is also currently ongoing.
