For the past 14 years Biblionef, has played a leading role in making storybooks with a focus on African culture and heritage available to children and adolescents, providing a foundation for literacy. To date the organisation donated over one million books to 6 148 children’s organisations countrywide benefitting more than three million children.
Recently MySchool via their Thuso Fund partnered with Biblionef and donated R70,000 so that five rural schools can receive new storybooks in isiZulu, Sesotho, Xitsonga and English. The MySchool donation has made a total of 1000 books possible of which 600 were delivered to Mkhize Combined School in Hathikulu near Estcourt, Kwenzokuhle Primary School in Muden and Nhlalakahle Primary School in the village of Mhlumayo, benefitting 3250 KZN learners. In the Free State books will be delivered to Thari Ya Tshepepe Intermediate School in Botshabelo and in Limpopo to Pfuxetani Primary School in Mavalani Village.
“We believe that children should be able to read for pleasure which stimulates and develops their imagination and is key in literacy development. We thank MySchool for supporting South Africa’s youth, especially those in remote communities, and for sharing our passion to give children books to open up their world”, says Jean Williams, Biblionef Executive Director.
With over 720 000 card holders and growing, MySchoolMyVillageMyPlanet raised more than R36 million last year for over 10 000 beneficiaries covering the full spectrum from those caring for people in need to animals and environmental causes, including some 9 000 schools. The Thuso Fund was established by MySchool to support under-resourced schools and charities across South Africa. By selecting the fund as beneficiary, MySchoolMyVillageMyPlanet card holders can make a direct contribution in support of various causes.
