The conception of the technology comes at a time when government is looking to establish a commercially viable small-scale maize milling sector that will infuse competition in the currently concentrated milling industry, as envisaged in the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP).
Last week, Minister Rob Davies launched the fifth iteration of the IPAP, with a focus on the country’s manufacturing sector to create jobs.
Speaking at the launch, Davies emphasised that if South Africa was to grow its employment, it needed to pay attention to the productive sectors of the economy, as South Africa’s economy is said to be import intensive.
South Africa’s maize milling industry was deregulated over 10-years ago. Maize is the most important crop in South Africa, as it is both the major feed grain and staple food for the majority of the population.
According to the dti, up to 37% of the consumer price of maize-meal is accounted for by transport and logistics costs.
Maize is grown in rural areas and transported to urban and peri-urban areas for milling before being transported back to rural consumers.
In December last year, Davies launched the Kuvusa small-scale maize mill in Durban. At the time, Davies said the mill would contribute to the industrialisation of the country and would create jobs in Durban and the surrounding areas, with 27 direct and 120 indirect jobs having already been created as a result of the mill.
Friday’s launch will take place at the 5 Star Business Park in Honeydew.
