The consultative summit, which goes to the Eastern Cape today, has so far been hosted in Mpumalanga, and will be held in all the other provinces.

The APRM was adopted by African Heads of State and Government as a systematic peer learning and self-assessment mechanism based on the NEPAD Declaration on Democracy, Political, Economic and Corporate Governance adopted at the inaugural summit of the African Union in Durban in July 2002.

The APRM seeks to foster the adoption of policies, standards and practices that lead to political stability, high economic growth, sustainable development and accelerated sub-regional and continental economic integration through sharing of experiences and reinforcement of successful and best practices.

In compliance with the norms and standards of the mechanism and as part of South Africa’s monitoring and evaluation obligations on the APRM, the country has tabled its first and second progress reports on the implementation of the National Programme of Action at the African Union Summit of Heads of States and Government of APRM participating countries in January 2009 and January 2011 respectively.
