Connecting schools
The Department of Basic Education has partnered with mobile operator Vodacom to implement similar centres in each of the nine provinces.
The aim is to empower teachers with a variety of teaching resources, rich in multimedia content, according to the department.
Each ICT resource centre will offer a computer room with 50 computer terminals; other educational aids, models and content; Internet connectivity; and training facilities.
The centres will have 200 schools linked to them for IT-based general teacher development.
The department adds that a further 20 schools will be selected for the maths and science programme. “The 20 maths and science schools will each be given a laptop with a zero-rated SIM card to enable free Internet access, a multimedia projector, and an interactive board.”
