MTN Ghana Foundation has constructed and handed over a 30-bed male and female ward to the Sene Government Hospital in the Brong Ahafo Region as part of MTN Ghana's Suncity Festival. MTN's investment in the project is Ghc116,000 and the hospital provided Ghc16,473.
The construction follows an appeal by the hospital authorities to the MTN Ghana Foundation to assist with the facility after the Hospital was upgraded into a district hospital.
The Sene Hospital caters for the health needs of increasing patient numbers from Kwame Danso and surrounding communities like Kyeamekrom, Bassa, Kojokrom and Bantama. The district has an estimated population of 120,000.
With the construction of the new facility, patients who have to be admitted for treatment will no longer have to be referred to other district hospitals. The chiefs and people of Kwame Danso, where the hospital is located, expressed deep appreciation to MTN for supporting their communities with such development projects.
Nana Yaw Owusu, Chairman of the Sene Traditional Council, was full of praise for the provision of the male and female wards, saying, "This will bring a lot of relief to patients as well as their caretakers and relatives." He urged the hospital authorities to ensure that the facility is properly maintained for future generations.
During the commissioning of the ward, Mr. James Bukari Basintale, General Manager of the Northern Business District of MTN, said, "This is a critical and strategic contribution, not just to save lives, but also to help reduce poverty and dependency levels in the district. MTN is dedicated to the provision of quality health care to improve the socio-economic development of our country and this is one of the several health projects supported nationwide. It is our sincere hope that this facility serves the intended purpose."
The Hospital Admnistrator, Mr. Maani-Anu, thanked MTN for the support and pledged that the facility would be put to good use for the benefit of all who patients.
The Sene District was created out of the then Atebubu-Amantin District in 1988. It is one of the 22 districts in Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. It is the farthest district from Sunyani, the regional capital.
Suncity Festival is part of celebrations aimed at engaging MTN subscribers and other stakeholders in the Brong Ahafo Region. It includes festivities throughout the month of July and comes after a successful Ashantifest celebration.
The MTN Foundation was established by the MTN Group Board as the vehicle for effectively administering MTN's Corporate Social Responsibility contributions. The Foundation is funded by a percentage of profit after tax (PAT) of the relevant operating unit. The MTN Foundation has so far launched several projects including two flagship projects since its establishment in November 2007. These are the refurbishment of the 2nd floor Maternity block of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and establishment of 10 MTN ICT Learning Centres in all regions of Ghana. More than 40 other projects have been implemented across the country.
