The workshop aimed to highlight the work and challenges faced by the Community Development Worker (CDWs) in Gauteng. Some of the challenges raised include the lack of feedback on referrals to sector departments, publicity of the CDW programme across government departments, confusion about roles and responsibilities, the need for training and promoting good working relations between CDWs, ward committees and ward councilors.

Addressing the CDWs, the MEC for Local Government and housing, Mr Humphrey Mmemezi, reminded CDWs that they are the link between government and communities “you are the eyes and ears of government and you should consider yourselves extraordinary with the information that you have" he said. He encouraged them to cooperate with ward councilors and added that their work "cuts across all departments" enabling them to help everyone.

Presentations by various provincial departments including social development, GCIS, sports and recreation, agriculture and rural development and infrastructure development were made on the provincial perspective on community development workers in government.
