Kenya: Medical Doctors Win ICT Innovation Award

Two medical doctors have bagged the top ICT innovation award for their remote health solution that makes it possible for doctors to diagnose patients without physically meeting them. Partnering with an IT professional, the physicians built Medisoft East Africa to encourage the use of ICT in the medical field, after the two radiologists realized that main reasons why practices have not tapped existing technology to improve productivity was mainly limited information on available solutions and time to find the information. "Our aim was never to make money but on offering a solution. The award has really motivated us," says Dr. Kanake Ndii, a radiologist and one of the firms' directors. Kanake is currently a Masters student at the University of Nairobi. MediSoft, which also won in the Health Care Delivery category, specializes in radiology services and integrated archiving services. Some of the services include a filmless printing solution and a radiology information system that can be deployed by hospitals and clinics. Other winners include Green Dreams Tech Ltd with their product (icow) in the Agriculture category, Digital Divide Data Kenya in the Business Process Outsourcing sector, Kuza Biashara who bagged an award in Education and Training. The winners were recognized at a ceremony held at Leisure Lodge, Diani at the Connected Kenya Summit 2012. The awards, on their second year running, hopes to recognize and celebrate Kenyans, who have developed ICT solutions that drive economic growth and social development as outlined in Kenya's Vision 2030. This year the judges reviewed more than 400 entries in a stiff competition that saw thousands of entries made at the online platform. In last year awards, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), was the overall winner.
