A PRIVATE company, Galileo Travelport Ltd, has introduced a new technology in attempts to increase and improve efficiency in the delivery of aviation and tourism-related services in the country.
The technology, dubbed "Travelport SmartPoint" was officially launched over the weekend in Dar es Salaam. Speaking during the launching event, Galileo Travelport Ltd Chief Executive Officer, Eliasaph Mathew, said the newly-introduced technology has been designed to enhance efficiency in the operations of airlines and travel agents.
According to the official, with Travelport SmartPoint, travel agents and airlines can process flight tickets and make other arrangements for tourists and other travellers in a manner which is faster than it is at the moment. "The technology enables travel agents and airlines to make arrangements for their customers more efficiently in booking, making reservation for travellers and sell their tickets. All these are done by using the new system," said Mathew.
He added that travel agents can also use the system to make hotel reservations and car rentals which are used by tourists visiting the country. He also said that the company could help travel agents and airlines reduce operational costs because of the speed at which the new technology operates.
On his part, the Chairman of Tanzania Society of Travel Agents (TASOTA) and Chief Executive Officer of SykLink, Moustafa Khataw, hailed the new technology introduced by TravelPort SmartPoint, saying that it would greatly improve travel agents' services delivery, increase sales and expand the sector.
"Because of efficient technology, we will be able to provide standard and quality services to many customers at once. We could hardly make it in the past because of the slow and inefficient system which is currently being used," he said. He also noted that with the latest system, efficiency and profitability of many travel agents will increase, thus expand the entire travel agents' sub-sector.
Expansion of the sector, he explained, would increase both individuals (through selling flight tickets and providing related services) and government revenues, in terms of taxes paid by the travel agents and other players in the sector.
Launching the product, Travelport Regional Director for East Africa, Mr Martin Herbert, said the company was more than determined to improve the performance of airlines and travel agents in the region by coming up with information technologies-based solutions which would increase and improve their operations and services delivery.
"These solutions would also reduce costs of service delivery to a great extent. We are committed to support them (airlines and travel agents) realize their business goals," said Herbert.
