The ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Paynesville Science and Technology Model School in Duport Road, outside Monrovia took place Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The ground breaking ceremony was attended by officials of the government and the Coca Cola Company. The construction of the Paynesville Science and Technology Model School is being carried out by the Coca Cola Company. Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony, the Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Coca Cola, Mr. Alex Cummings, said the company is strongly committed to improving the lives of Liberians especially those in deprived communities. According to him, the company will do this through the provision of quality education, health and entrepreneurship programs as well as the provision of water and sanitation facilities. He noted that the initiative is in line with Coca Cola's "Live Positively" program. The Coca Cola's "Live Positively" program, Mr. Cummings said, is aimed at improving the lives of people in communities where the company operates. Among other things, Mr. Cummings added: "Having grown up in Liberia, I recognize the importance of education in our country. The long-term growth of Liberia is linked to its ability to develop the capability of its citizenry especially the youth. The Coca Cola Company is committed to assist in developing the capability." Also speaking at the occasion, Coca Cola's General Manager, Mr. Rocky Findley, said the initiative is in line with the commitment the Liberian Bottling Company made in 2011 when the Coca Cola system donated medical equipment and supplies to five medical facilities in Monrovia. He assured the company's support to the provision of safe drinking water and school infrastructure for selected communities. However, he fell short to name the selected communities that would benefit from the Coca Cola's school infrastructure. For her part, the County Education Officer of Montserrado County, Madam Gorma Minnie, lauded the company for such a meaningful undertaking. She underscored the need for such brilliant initiative to be carried to other parts of the country, as the country moves ahead with its development agenda. Madam Minnie then pledged that the Liberian government via the Ministry of Education will help provide teaching staff for the institution when the construction is finished.
