With cyber crime incidents gaining momentum in Tanzania, the government says it will enact a new law against the vice.
Deputy Minister for Communications, Science and Technology Charles Kitwanga told the 'Daily News' on Tuesday that his ministry was aware of increasing nature of cyber crimes in the country, hence the need to have the law in place.
"We expect that the envisaged law will be used to curb the incidents and punish the wrongdoers," he said. Mr Kitwanga expressed optimism, saying upon coming into operation of the law, the government, in collaboration with other players, would be able to curb escalating cyber crimes that have often caused losses to some people.
Mr Kitwanga also urged financial institutions and other key stakeholders to take the necessary measures against these technology-inspired crimes. "We have come to realize that these crimes partly persist because most users have little knowledge about sophisticated ICT-related services in various spheres of the economy.
"Inability to use ATM cards, for example, makes some bank clients seek assistance from other people, and this has sometimes led to fraud, causing loss to ATM card holders and the concerned banks," he said.
Mr Kiwanga stated that cyber crimes had become a global phenomenon, emphasizing the need to join efforts in fighting the problem.
He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to use its relevant regulatory organs, such as the Bank of Tanzania, to fight fraud in financial institutions.
