The recipient of this year's Housing Person of the Year was awarded to Molemo Laws Moholomi in recognition of vision, leadership and professional approach to the implementation of community housing service delivery where his initiatives have improved the quality of life for many families.

The Chartered Institute of Housing in the United Kingdom provided a R10,000 cash price which was awarded to Martin Abrahamse in recognition for obtaining the highest marks.  He is acknowledged for his diligence, time management and excellent research capabilities in the Housing Module as part of the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning Degree Programme at the University of the Free State.

This year the category, Community Development Project of the Year, was awarded to Communi-Care Community Learning Centre in recognition for the outstanding achievement in providing community support programmes in education, recreation and poverty relief, creating social cohesion. The organisation was commended for offering many activities and imparting skills for a better quality of life for ordinary South Africans.

The Social Housing Project of the Year was awarded to Lakehave Social Housing Project d e v e l o p e d  b y First Metro Housing Company in recognition of a significant contribution towards providing quality, well managed and affordable rental accommodation for income earners below R7500 per month giving exceptional value to the community.

Local Authority of the Year was awarded to Tlokwe City Council, Potchefstroom, in recognition for providing the local community with affordable, good quality, environmentally friendly housing and services under adverse conditions. The Local Authority was commended for harnessing local labour and resources providing a range of housing options at scale within time and budget.

A special merit award was awarded  to S e s h e g o Community Residential Units developed by the Limpopo Department of CoGHSTA in recognition for providing well designed good quality, low maintenance community residential units in a safe and secure environment making a positive contribution to the social and economic development of the community.

The Housing Project of the Year, under R120 000.00 per unit, was awarded to the City of Cape Towns' Community Rental Refurbishment Project - "Athlone, Hanover Park, Elsies River, Heideveld and Ottery" in recognition for the strategic approach to improving the lives of 7 800 families living in rental housing by sensitively refurbishing the existing housing stock and improving surrounding areas. The community was empowered through technical training, job creation, tenant participation and provision of recreation facilities.

The Housing Project of the Year, over R120 000.00, this year was awarded to Seraleng, developed by Toro Ya Africa (Pty) Ltd, in recognition of providing an innovative approach to funding well designed good quality and low maintenance affordable housing.  The company was commended for providing community support in the form of consumer education, home based health care and training to sustain the project.

A Special Merit Award was awarded to the Drommedaris Social Housing Project, developed by Communicare, in recognition of the project's design and innovative layout giving the community access to good quality rental housing. The development is well located in close proximity to transport routes, employment opportunities and social amenities including a learning centre within the complex.

A Special Merit Award was awarded to the Kleinmond Housing Project, developed by Motlekar in recognition of the project's unique design and innovative layout giving the community access to good quality and environmentally friendly housing. The development maximized the use of local resources and labour to the benefit of the broader community.

At the awards evening the SAHF Development Trust handed over a cheque for R30 000.00 to The Ark City of Refuge in support of education. Pastor Jack Mahoney received the funds on behalf of two high school children which will provide support for their entire school year covering their costs for education fees and all other activities related to furthering their education.

The Southern African Housing Foundation (SAHF) Development Trust, a registered NGO (Not for Gain Organisation), was established with the aim of improving the quality of life of disadvantaged communities.

The objectives of the SAHF Development Trust is to promote the creation of sustainable housing environments and to assist, support and encourage innovations in the field of housing and the development of sustainable Human Settlements.
