UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon Sunday arrived Nigeria on his first official visit to the country. The UN scribe who was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Odein Ajumugobia arrived the Maitama General Hospital, Abuja exactly 4.40pm.
In his address, Ki Moon said health care indexes across the globe mostly on women, children and development were not encouraging, indicating that more battle lies ahead.
According to him, his visit is to access the performance of Nigeria in the areas of maternal, child health care and development, adding that, where the country has shown tremendous improvement like in polio reduction, the message will be preached to the outside world.
He said: "Though, it is the wish of UN to help young mothers, children and women to get better health care, unfortunately, one thousand women die daily from complications resulting from child birth, while 25,000 children die daily," stressing that "This is unacceptable especially when these can be prevented."
While commending the effort of the Federal Government in the fight against polio, the UN boss observed that effort by government to improve health system though have started bearing fruits, more is still expected.
Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu in his remarks said the country has over the last one year increased its performance in the health sector, with an improvement in general health care service delivery.
He said the country has witnessed an upsurge in the number of midwives from 2500 in 2010 to 4000, while health facilities have also increased from 625 to 1000.
Also speaking, Minister of FCT Sen. Bala Muhammed said the administration has redefined its policies on health, specifically in the areas of primary health care, immunisation and women empowerment
