Mozambican businessmen are complaining that inspections undertaken by government institutions are "more punitive than educational", and are asking the leadership of the Confederation of Mozambican Business Associations (CTA) to intervene with the government.
The problem raised by the businessmen is that the inspectors, when they detect any anomaly, merely impose fines or other forms of sanctions, rather than advising businesses to adopt better practices.
This concern has been presented during several meetings held between the CTA leadership and businessmen operating in Sofala, Zambezia, Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces. The CTA delegation visiting the provinces consists of CTA chairperson Salimo Abdula, the deputy chairpersons, Rogerio Manuel and Henk Son, and the organisation's managing director, Alima Hussein.
Accompanying the CTA leadership are officials of the National Private Sector Support Directorate of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
These visits are part of the CTA's monitoring and assessment of the activities of the national business class in order to gauge how the mechanisms of interaction and dialogue with the government are working.
During the visits, other questions presented included the high costs of transport in the northern provinces, difficult access roads, and allegedly high fees on business charged by municipal councils, without any clear criteria.
Businesses protest that all these factors make their operations more expensive, and so have a damaging impact on their competitiveness.
The CTA visits are held regularly, as part of the expansion throughout the country of the Confederation's activities. An example of this expansion is the creation of the Provincial Business Councils.
