Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has commissioned a multi-million naira information and communications technology (ICT) centre in Abuja as part of its effort to ensure that every teacher in Nigeria is equipped with adequate knowledge on the use of computers to promote teaching and learning in schools.
President of NUT Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya who led the commissioning ceremony at the union's national headquarters, Lugbe, Abuja, lamented the poor knowledge of ICT among Nigerian teachers in a "digital age," saying the union has taken it upon itself to ensure that every teacher had fair knowledge of the use of computer.
According to him, "Computer is the topic today. Anywhere you go all over the globe, computer is the in-thing and we cannot afford to leave teachers in Nigeria behind."
The ICT centre is equipped with 60 units of desktop computers all connected to internet infrastructure and "would be dedicated to the training of teachers, in series of training that would be organized at intervals for all the Nigerian teachers from states and local governments."
Comrade Olukoya said the NUT has already acquired a training manual entitled, "Do It Yourself" to reduce the job of facilitators, as the handbook is literally designed for everyone to read and understand.
He said the handbooks would be distributed on recommendations to teachers across the federation before the commencement of the training programme.
He added that the centre would also serve as an "invaluable resource facility for teachers undertaking researches in various fields of studies," adding that it would be linked to useful websites to upgrade knowledge of teachers on the best practices all over the world.
The NUT president urged teachers to catch up with the global trend because a substantial aspect of teaching and learning in modern day all over the globe is done by the help of ICT and Nigerian teachers must essentially catch up with the trend
