“Government will build on this by ensuring the placing of flags in schools and public institutions to promote our national symbols and identity. We urge all our people to learn the national anthem and sing it properly, with pride,” said Zuma.

He wished the Proteas and the Springboks luck in upcoming world cup tournaments, saying the Springboks must defend their 2007 Rugby World Cup title.

“We also wish the national netball team well when they compete in the Netball World Cup in July. We will be fully behind them,” said the President.

He saluted “one of our finest cricketers”, Makhaya Ntini, who was invited to the opening of Parliament as a special guest. “He has made an enormous contribution to local and international cricket,” he said.

Zuma announced a programme to celebrate national icons and honour individuals who have made an enormous contribution to the liberation of the country.
