Mlangheni said the association was concerned by the increasing number of teenage pregnancies that doctors see every day, with more young girls of school going age presenting to health facilities with unplanned pregnancies.
“What is even more disturbing is the number of these very young girls who are HIV positive, with many only being aware of their status during the ante-natal period. Another more disturbing growing trend is of young girls presenting repeatedly within a short period of time for termination of pregnancy, which was intended to give women a choice and control over their bodies. Sadly, some abuse this and use it as a form of contraception,” Mlangheni said.
She further invited parents, teachers and the community to join the doctors in educating and supporting young girls noting that teenage pregnancies are most often unwelcome and place an economic and social burden on families.
“It takes a village to raise a child, therefore, collectively we can lead these young girls to a bright and healthy future,” Mlangheni said.
Pregnancy Awareness Week is commemorated from 7 to 13 February.
