He said SAA planned to launch core regional and domestic routes, with long haul fleets to China also on the cards.

“The delivery of the new aircraft comes at a time when the airline is rolling out its network expansion plan, offering its passengers more convenient connections to local, regional and international destinations,” said Gigaba.

As is tradition in South Africa and after consultations, the President said the aircraft was going to be named after heroine Charlotte Maxeke in recognition of her contribution to the country.

He said that the airbus was going to help SAA operate productively and also help the country boost inter-trade on the continent.

“We must explore the developing world and the new markets. Africa presents an [opportunity] for new ventures,” he said.

Setting the tone for Thursday’s State of the Nation Address, Zuma said that more apprenticeship positions should be created in the aviation industry to help with skills development and employment creation.

He commended the acquisition of the Airbus for its fuel efficiency. He said this was in line with the country’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute towards a green economy.
