In areas where registration was affected by flooding, she said local municipalities would hold targeted registration.

“They might go door to door to get people registered or make announcements to the community on the date registrations would be held in the area,” said Bam

Bam yesterday said that by 5pm on Saturday more than 400000 people had visited the 28000 voting stations around the country.

“We thank all South African who have heeded our call to register, re-register and check their details,” said Bam

She admitted that registration on the first day was slow.

“Normally the Saturday is the slower of the two days. We expect high numbers for the second day,” said Bam

She could not reveal how many people had registered or re-registered yesterday and said those figures would only be available on Wednesday.

“We are excited to say in addition to the people who visited voting stations, more than 97000 people visited the IEC website by 11 am on Sunday to check their details,” said Bam

She added that 129000 people had sent smses reconfirm their registration details.

“More than 13000 used the call centre to enquire about their details.

“Registration in the Free State, Northern Cape and northern parts of the Western Cape was hampered by heavy rains.

“Increased flooding in the Northern Cape led to the closure of eight voting stations in additions to the five that were closed earlier on Saturday morning,” said Bam

The eight stations were in Poffadder, Sol Plaatjie, Sutherland and three in the Postmansburg area. She added that in the Free State. 11 stations did not open on Saturday due to heavy rains.

“In the Western Cape, apart from two which were closed on Saturday another one was closed in the Prince Albert area. All in all, three station were closed due to rain,” she said

Bam said registration went smoothly in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

She said officials at a voting station in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal were attacked by dogs.
