The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has over the years embarked on dangerous and ambitious peace keeping missions - under the auspices of the United Nations - to secure stability and peace in war-torn African nations.
Sisulu was addressing more than 200 officers commanding of the SA Army at their mid-year strategic planning and review session.
She indicated that challenges of money shortages in the SA Army would be addressed to ensure that it can continue to implement all its programmes.
The minister revealed that her department was prioritising landward forces to ensure that that they are amply able to protect the country, and also assist to address other challenges like shortage of community infrastructure like bridges and roads.
Sisulu added that she met with the leadership of AgriSA to discuss partnership in patrolling the border, sharing information and stopping stock theft in the Free State.
The minister said that reports from the borders of KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga show that the SANDF’s presence is being felt.
“I am told that poachers are running for their life on the border of KwaZulu Natal. Vehicle stealing syndicates on the border of Mpumalanga and Mozambique are beginning to feeling the pain as we arrest them every day.
“Criminal syndicates on our border with Zimbabwe are also running. We are moving to finalise details for the deployment by early next year on the Lesotho and Free State border,” she said. - BuaNews
