Johannesburg - The South African government will next month launch a new
unit to investigate corruption, fraud and maladministration within the
government.
The country's Public Service and Administration minister Richard Baloyi made the announcement in Pretoria on Tuesday.
Baloyi, speaking at the 2010 Conference of the Association of
Southern African Departments of Public Administration and Management,
said the unit would be launched early in November.
The unit would investigate complaints of corruption, fraud,
misconduct and maladministration in all three tiers of government –
national, provincial and municipal.
He said there were situations where the auditor general had raised
issues, but these were not being dealt with by the department.
Baloyi said: 'Cases of the administration of discipline in the public service take long.
You find a person is put on suspension for a long period of time.
'You are not finalising the disciplinary cases within a reasonable period of time.
'And you find that also even on the part of that person there is no
compelling reason for that person to appear before a disciplinary
hearing.
'They keep on postponing because this person is after all getting a salary at the end of the day.'
He said more details would be released in early November.
President Jacob Zuma's government has recently focused the spotlight
on corruption, especially since the conviction of former South African
police commissioner Jackie Selebi. The event has sparked an
unprecedented state blitzkrieg on graft. Media and members of the
public alike recently expressed dismay at the fact that the retiring
Gauteng province commissioner of police had his farewell party in the
house of a shady character – a brothel king.
