The Electronic Commerce Act 2000, which became law on 20 September 2000, implements the Electronic Signatures Directive (1999/93/EC) and, in part, the Electronic Commerce Directive (2000/31/EC). The Act provides (with some exceptions) for the legal recognition of electronic signatures, electronic writing and electronic contracts. It authorises the use of encryption and sets the rights and obligations of Certification Service Providers (CSPs).
