There is furious debate around the world over whether Edward Snowden is a hero or a criminal. A poll by Reuters shows that 31 percent of Americans think Edward Snowden is a whistle-blower, 23 percent see him as a traitor and the remaining half of Americans say they can’t judge.
The news agency also reports that the US falls short of its own mark when it projects its standards upon others. The Washington Post blames the Obama administration of hypocrisy. It says that President Obama, who accused the Bush administration of violating civil liberties in the name of security, now defends his own administration’s collection of Americans’ phone records and Internet activities.
In China, the People’s Daily says the US government faces the thorny task of having to ease domestic public anger, while at the same time having to explain its take on Internet behavior to the world.
