According to a study by the Latin American Association of Research Centres and Telecommunication Enterprise (Ahciet), the region needs to invest an average of USD 44.3 billion per year until 2020 to close the digital divide, compared with Europe (an average of 25 countries). Argentina, with 11 million connected households and 42 million mobile broadband subscriptions, is positioned next to Uruguay as the two countries that could reach the 'Gap 0' in both fixed and mobile broadband, if that level of investment is met.

The report 'Latin America: Challenge 2020', estimates that 10 percent more needs to be invested, from USD 40 per capita (2007-2011) to USD 66. Chile needs to invest the most per capita, at USD 171, followed by Brazil (USD 93) and Argentina (USD 85).
