The Global E-Government Survey 2008 is now available at United Nations Bookstores.

The seventh session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Public Administration was held at United Nations Headquarters from 14 to 18 April 2008. The Committee is responsible for supporting the work of ECOSOC concerning the promotion and development of public administration and governance among Member States, in connection with the UN Millennium Development Goals.

This survey is to help cities around the world in identifying the challenges they are facing and assessing which policies are most effective in addressing these challenges. The survey is supported by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the United Nations Public Administration Network (UNPAN), among others, and designed by the Open City Taskforce, consisting of regional development practitioners from international organizations, NGOs and universities.

THE PROCESS:

1. Please click the link City Performance Questionnaire and answer the questions.

You will assess the overall performance of the city which you are most familiar with. The questions are designed to ask your perception on the city?/FONT>s performance from several angles, including innovation, entrepreneurship, ICT, quality-of-life, sustainability, and resources available for the city to address these issues.

2. Answer ONE of the following surveys

You are requested to answer more specific questions on the urban development initiative which you feel is most relevant for your city.

With UNITAR e-Learning, learners will continue to benefit from our up-to-date and engaging content, practical and applicable knowledge from instructor-moderated online discussions and network of global participants. Courses will be structured in small class size to allow personal and active mentoring from our Course Directors. Successful participants will be awarded a certificate from UNITAR.

The first volume focuses on the use of mobile technology in the areas of health and learning. Future plans include publishing additional volumes on the use of ICTs in other areas such as human resource development, environment, management development, finance, farming, and government operations. In addition, to keep up with rapidly changing e-technology, ICT applications in the various areas will be periodically updated both in published form and on the United Nations Public Administration Network (UNPAN) E/M-government Knowledge Bank hosted on the UNPAN Portal.

After the success of the first African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE) in 2007, we are pleased to announce that APORDE will take place again in 2008.
APORDE will allow talented academics, policy makers and civil society representatives from Africa (and to a lesser extent, from Asian and Latin America) to gain access to alternatives to mainstream thinking on development issues and to be equipped in a way that will foster original thinking. Participants will receive intensive high-level training, interact with some of the best development economists in the world and with other participants.
