Korea has shared its technology-based weather forecasting systems with three Asian nations.

Fourteen staff members from weather agencies in the Philippines, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have visited Seoul and started a three-week educational program to learn about Korea's weather forecasting technology and systems from Oct. 18 to Nov. 7. The program is co-hosted by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

The government has been running this program for three years in response to the global community's request that Korea share its information and communications technology (ICT)-based weather forecasting systems. Lectures about combining technology with general weather forecasts are provided in the first and second years of the program. The third, and final, year of the program covers the running and management of atmospheric prediction systems and these are offered to managers and other administrators. The three Asian countries have been participating in this program since 2013, and this is the final year for all three.

Atmospheric prediction requires a wide and comprehensive range of technologies, and developing one's own prediction system independently is difficult, experts say. The KMA has designed the program as a step-by-step, three-year program to help build capacity, allowing the weather agencies from overseas to develop action plans on their own.

"This has been a great opportunity to learn about and integrate Korea's weather forecasting technology and systems with our own services, and I hope Korea and Sri Lanka will build a constructive relationship on this base," said one of the Sri Lankan participants who has participated in this program since the first stages.
