Indian ministries will start to phase out use of paper documents after an instruction from the Cabinet Secretariat.

The first step of this process, announced last week, will be training for all officials on using eFile, a document management system created by India’s National Informatics Centre (NIC).

The system allows for transfer of receipts, files and archived information, and will be used for central and state communication.

In time, officials will be expected to use e-Office, a bespoke software suite built by the NIC.

Since coming to power, the Indian Prime Minister has been setting out plans for reform of India’s e-governance, following his work in the state of Gujarat.
