The Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has launched a ‘Waste Less’ mobile app so residents can easily find nearby recyclable collection points and related information.
The app features a map that shows 4,000 collection locations and lists what recyclables are accepted at each point, so users can search for the nearest or most suitable place to bring their recyclables to.
Users can record their daily recycling efforts using the ‘My Recycling Diary’ function.
EPD will also share latest news and best practices about waste management, reduction and recovery through this app.
The app is embedded with interactive features that allow users to share content they find interesting with their friends.
According to EPD, waste reduction and recycling are critical elements of the local waste management framework.
Through the existing waste recovery system, about 2.16 million tonnes of municipal solid waste were recovered in Hong Kong in 2012.
Of that total, 3 per cent was recycled locally and 97 per cent was exported to China and other countries for recycling, with an export earning of HK$6 billion (US$0.8 billion).
