Najib Razak, Malaysia’s Prime Minister and President of the ruling party United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), has urged his party members to leverage social media to engage with citizens.

With the number of first-time voters expected to double to six million by the next general election in 2017, Malaysia is seeing a rise in the number of youth who are eager to engage and play a role in governance.

The proliferation of smartphones among youth, furthered by the Government’s policy to issue RM 200 (US$ 61) rebate on smartphones for the youth, has led to social media being a key channel for the youth to engage the Government and receive information.

The Malaysian Government is keen to leverage this interactive digital channel to engage its audience. Chief of UMNO Women, Sharizat Abdul Jalil, has said that social media is overtaking the traditional channels of information sharing by government.

UMNO’s Women Youth wing has recently set up a social media unit representing all 191 divisions of the party.
