The head of Democratic Party’s Jakarta chapter, Maj. Gen. (ret) Nachrowi Ramli, has praised Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s leadership in tackling flooding, saying the administration responded well and therefore has been able to minimize damage caused by the flooding.

“Jokowi is on the right track,” Nachrowi, a former opponent in the 2012 gubernatorial election, said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said the administration was in the process of normalizing the city’s waterways, improving sewer capacities and dredging rivers throughout the city. However, he also suggested the administration speed up the projects to minimize the damage.

Some regions in Jakarta like Jl. KH Abdullah Syafei, Tebet, South Jakarta and Jl. Arjuna in West Jakarta were crippled by massive flooding originating from a combination of water coming from upstream regions in Puncak and a day-long downpour earlier this week.

Four people died in the recent flooding and dozens of others were evacuated and housed in shelters.
