Singapore: Talks to Boost National Service to Involve Members of the Public

SINGAPORE: Efforts to boost national service in Singapore are picking up pace -- the public can soon take part in talks to discuss how to boost NS commitment, and how to better recognise the contributions of national servicemen.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen chaired the second meeting of the Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS) on Tuesday morning. The first meeting was held in May 2013 at the Basic Military Training Centre.

Dr Ng also met soldiers at the Infantry Training Institute.

The idea of the talks was mooted at the Committee of Supply Debate in 2013.

The committee will next hear from members of the public -- from June to September 2013. Those interested in taking part can sign up at www.strengthenNS.sg.

Lieutenant Wang Jiun Haur, the support OC of 790 SIR, said: "The monetary incentive and various things are not so important. But I think what's useful is for society as a whole to recognise that NS is necessary.

"And I think that is something that will give people the moral support or the impetus to continue coming for training, even though they have other obligations."

Mr Ridzuan Ismail, a member of the CSNS, said: "We are heartened by the numerous public feedback and suggestions. They affirm that NS remains a key national institution, underpinning the defence of Singapore.

"We will continue to seek views over the next few months to understand the different perspectives of NS from NSFs and NSmen to employers and family members to support our national servicemen."

Mr Ridzuan will co-host the first focus group discussion on June 22.
